PopDesk is published by Tyron Morgan, its owner and editor. The publisher decides how the information below is used (the “controller”). This notice explains what we collect, why, and what you can do about it. Questions or requests: newsroom@popdesk.online.
What we collect, and why
| What | Why | Legal basis (UK and EU) | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| Server records: your internet address, browser and the pages requested, kept by our hosting company | To run the site, keep it secure and stop abuse | Our legitimate interest in a working, secure site | A short period set by the host, then deleted |
| Visit counts | To know which pages are read. We do not use a visitor analytics service at present. | Legitimate interest; no cookies, nothing that identifies you | Totals only |
| Newsletter: your email address, optional first name, the emails you chose, and the time and internet address of your sign-up | To send the emails you asked for, and to show you agreed | Your consent | Until you unsubscribe; the record of consent for up to three years after |
| Messages you send us | To answer you and keep a record of corrections and removals | Legitimate interest | Up to three years |
| Advertising cookies, once ads are on | To show ads, personalized only if you agree | Your consent (UK and EU); you can opt out in the US | Up to 13 months |
Saved stories and your US or UK choice stay in your own browser; we never see them. The cookie list names every item.
Newsletter
Our email provider (Mailrelay) keeps the list for us in the European Union and sends the emails on our instructions. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link. We never sell or share the list. See the newsletter terms.
Advertising
When advertising is on, Google AdSense shows ads on this site. In the UK, the European Economic Area and Switzerland, you are asked for your consent before any advertising cookies are used, and you can choose ads that are not personalized. In US states with privacy laws, you can opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information for advertising, and of targeted advertising, through the Privacy choices link at the foot of every page. We treat a Global Privacy Control signal from your browser as that opt-out.
Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your earlier visits to this and other websites. Google’s advertising cookies let it and its partners show you ads based on those visits. You can opt out of personalized advertising in Google’s Ads Settings, or opt out of some other vendors’ cookies at aboutads.info and youronlinechoices.eu.
We do not sell personal information for money.
Trailers
Trailers load from YouTube’s privacy-enhanced service only when you press play. Nothing from YouTube loads before that.
Who else handles it
Our hosting company (in South Africa) for the website and its server records; our email provider (in the EU) for the newsletter; Cloudflare for visit counts; Google for advertising, once it is on. Where your information goes to a country outside the UK or the EU, we rely on the safeguards the law provides for such transfers, such as standard contract clauses.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, including under the UK GDPR, the EU GDPR and US state laws such as California’s, you can:
- ask what we hold about you and get a copy;
- ask us to correct it or delete it;
- object to how we use it, or withdraw your consent at any time (this does not affect what we did before);
- opt out of the sale or sharing of your information and of targeted advertising (US);
- complain to a data protection authority: in the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk); in the EU, the authority where you live.
Write to newsroom@popdesk.online. We reply within one month (45 days under some US state laws), and we do not treat you differently for using these rights. To protect your information we may ask you to confirm a detail only you would know, such as the email address you signed up with; you may also ask through an authorized agent. If we turn a request down, we say why, and you can appeal by replying to our answer; we decide the appeal within 45 days and tell you how to complain to your state’s attorney general if you disagree.
Children
This site is not aimed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you think a child has signed up to the newsletter, write to us and we will delete it.
Changes
If this notice changes, the date at the top changes with it, and we say what changed in the next newsletter if it matters.
